History of the Round Cut Diamond
Diamonds became popular as ornaments in jewelry in the 1400's and the different techniques and styles of diamond cuts such as the Round Cut Diamond were gradually developed over many years.
Description of the Modern Brilliant Cut Diamond
The modern round brilliant diamond consists of 56-58 facets including the culet. Between the table and the girdle are generally thirty-two facets, and below the girdle twenty-four. The facets maximize the volume of light that is reflected from the inside and produce the greatest brilliance.
Description of Eight or Single Cut Diamond
Eight or Single Cut Diamonds consist of 18 facets and are often used for very small diamonds, under 1 or 2 "points" which only have eight facets on the crown, eight facets on the pavilion, plus the table and culet.
Description of Old European Cut Diamond
An older, less precisely cut version of the modern brilliant cut. The old European diamond is characterised by a very small table, a heavy crown, great overall depth and a circular girdle.
Description of Swiss Cut Diamond
Halfway between a brilliant and an eight cut, with 34 facets in total.
Description of the Rose Cut Diamond
Rose cuts look like diamonds which have been cut upside-down, they rise to a point at the top, and are often flat at the base. The bottom is flat. The crown is domed shaped and the facets meet in a point in the center. Invented in the mid 16th century, the Rose Cut is also known by the the Antwerp rose, Crowned Rose Cut, Dutch Cut, and the Full Holland Cut.
Round Cut Diamond - the Cutting Process
Diamond Facets are the smooth surface areas of a diamond which are cut and polished to control the brilliance and the durability of a diamond. A skilful diamond cutter brings out all the brilliance and sparkle of a diamond by choosing the most appropriate cut, such as one of the Round Diamond cuts.
